What we cannot accept.
We do not take any bed-bug-infested mattresses, box springs, frames, or other furniture. No exceptions.
This is the most important honesty section on the page, so we want to be direct about it. Bed bugs travel home in the truck, infest our other customers, and we cannot risk that. If we suspect bed bugs on arrival, we will decline the job at the door and we will not charge you a trip fee for that decline.
What to do if you have a bed-bug-infested mattress:
- Call a licensed pest control company first. Have the unit treated or confirmed treated before pickup. Most professional exterminators in the Utica area can provide a certificate of treatment.
- Bag and seal the mattress before moving it. Heavy-duty mattress encasement bags are available at Home Depot, Lowe's, or Amazon for under $20.
- Local disposal options for bagged bed-bug mattresses: Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority accepts properly bagged treated mattresses at the transfer station as part of a separate haul-out (call OHSWA directly for current rates and bagging requirements).
- After successful treatment, we are happy to take the unit on a regular pickup. Just tell us when you call so we can ask the right questions.
We do not take mattresses that have visible bed bug fecal staining, live bug sightings during walkthrough, or that came out of a known infested room within the past 6 months without documented treatment. Same standard applies to box springs and upholstered frames.
For non-bed-bug stained or soiled mattresses (urine, water damage, mold), we will quote on a case-by-case basis but most are still acceptable as long as they are dry at pickup.

Stairs do not change the price. The most common difficult mattress pulls we run are:

What happens to your old mattress.
A used mattress is not just trash. Every unit follows one of three routes, in priority order:
1. Donation
If the mattress is in good condition (clean, structurally intact, less than 10 years old, no stains or odors) and a partner is currently accepting, it goes there first.

- Refugee resettlement coordinators (occasional, when families are setting up homes)
We do not push donation when it is not appropriate; most used mattresses do not qualify, and we are honest about that on-site.
2. Recycling at OHSWA
Non-donatable mattresses route to the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority transfer station.

For a single mattress from a ground-floor bedroom, the whole pickup typically takes 15 minutes on-site. A full bedroom set (mattress + box spring + frame) from a second-floor bedroom usually runs 25 to 40 minutes.

Do you take the box spring and frame too?
Yes. The single-item $200 price covers the mattress, box spring, and frame as one bed set. Bed frames (wood, metal, platform, or adjustable bases), headboards, and footboards are all included when they are part of the same job.
Can you remove a mattress from a basement or upstairs?
Yes, and it does not change the price. We bring mattress slings, blanket pads, and door-jamb protectors on every pickup. We have hauled queen and king mattresses out of finished basements with tight stairwell turns, second-floor master bedrooms with switchback stairs, and third-floor apartments with no elevator. Stairs are part of the job.
What if my mattress is too big to fit in the truck or trailer?
We bring a full-size trailer that handles up to king and California king mattresses without folding. Memory foam mattresses can be folded for transport if needed, but innerspring mattresses we keep flat to protect the box spring. Will the mattress be recycled or sent to landfill?

Non-donatable mattresses go to the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority transfer station, which recovers approximately 80% of an average innerspring mattress as recycling stream material (steel coils, wood frame, foam). Landfill is the last resort and the smallest share by volume.
Do you offer free mattress removal?
No, and anyone advertising free mattress removal in Utica is either reselling working units in violation of public health code (used mattress resale is restricted in New York state), reselling your contact info, or dumping illegally.
