What we take
on a shed
cleanout.

Backyard sheds in Utica are almost always one of two jobs: empty the contents (structure stays), or empty the contents AND tear the shed down and haul it. Either way the work comes apart the same way. For a full demo job we handle the structure piece by piece:

  • All contents — lawn equipment, broken yard tools, accumulated junk
  • The roof — shingles, metal sheeting, OSB or plywood decking
  • The walls — siding, sheathing, framing studs, headers
  • The floor — pressure-treated joists, plywood decking, anchors
  • Doors and windows — hardware, glass, frames, hinges
  • Shelving, workbenches, pegboard built into the shed
  • Attached gutters, downspouts, and trim
  • Metal banding, brackets, and anchoring tying it to the pad

We bring our own sawzalls, pry bars, sledgehammers, contractor bags, blanket pads, and a 14-foot trailer. A typical 8x10 wood shed comes apart cleanly in 2 to 4 hours with a two-person crew. Steel and vinyl sheds (Tuff Shed, Arrow, Suncast) come apart faster because the panels are designed to disassemble — they price the same since the volume routing is similar.

What we do NOT touch on a shed cleanout: concrete slab foundations, paver pad bases, gravel foundations, electrical wiring that runs underground from the house, or any landscaping around the shed. The pad stays exactly as-is. If you also need the pad gone, that is a separate concrete demolition quote. We also cannot legally haul liquid household hazardous waste — oil-based paint, solvents, gasoline, or pesticides need to go to the Oneida County HHW collection.

The same flat-rate truckload tiers as every UJR job.

Shed cleanouts use Utica Junk Removal's standard volume-based pricing — the same tiers posted on the homepage. Our pricing page literally lists "a shed full of junk" as the example for a Full Load.

1/4 Load
$325
Light contents only, small shed

Example volume: a small sofa or loveseat equivalent. Suitable for emptying a mostly-empty small shed.

1/2 Load
$400
Small shed contents or light demo

Example volume: a full bedroom set. Fits emptying a typical 8x8 shed or a light demo on a small wood shed.

3/4 Load
$475
Mid-size shed + light demo

Example volume: a large dining set and buffet. Typical for an 8x10 shed with mixed contents and structure haul.

Multi-load
$1,000+
Large shed or heavy demo

Two or more loads for 10x12+ sheds, heavy framing, board-and-batten, or barn-style construction. Quoted on photo.

Difficulty adder: $85/hour applies when demo runs heavy or tight — anchored sheds bolted to concrete, hardwood framing, salvage-grade construction, or limited trailer access. Toxic items (oil-based paint, solvents) carry a small $2/item fee. Both are flagged when you send the photo, so the written quote is the final number.

For a firm quote, email a photo to info@junkremovaluticany.com. Include the shed dimensions, the construction material, and the access path from the shed to where the trailer can park.

Six steps from photo quote to a swept pad.

Once the photo quote is confirmed and the job is scheduled, here is exactly how the work runs.

01
Arrival
Ryan or Drake arrives with a second crew member, the truck, and a 14-foot trailer. We confirm the shed location, walk the trailer path, and lay blanket pads on any decking we need to cross.
02
Contents first
Everything inside the shed comes out and gets sorted on a tarp. Working tools and equipment in donation-ready condition get set aside. Hazardous items (oil paint, solvents, gas) get flagged for HHW disposal — we cannot legally haul them.
03
Roof & walls down
We strip the roof first — shingles or metal sheeting, then OSB decking, then ridge cap. Wall panels come off next, working from the door opening outward so the remaining structure stays braced.
04
Frame & floor
Once the roof and walls are down, framing studs come apart with sawzalls and pry bars. Floor decking is last — we pull anchor bolts, lift decking off the joists, and load every piece on the trailer.
05
Sweep the pad
Pad, lawn, or gravel base — whatever the shed was sitting on gets swept clean. Leftover nails, hardware, shingle granules, and sawdust get vacuumed up with a contractor shop-vac.
06
Haul & route
Every piece goes to the right routing — donation, scrap metal, wood waste, or transfer station. Foundation looks exactly the same as the day the shed was installed, minus the shed itself.

Where your shed material actually goes.

Most of a shed has somewhere to go besides the landfill. We sort at our yard before final disposal and route material in three directions:

Donation routing

Working tools and yard equipment in donation-ready condition route to local partners:

  • Rescue Mission of Utica
  • Salvation Army Utica Citadel
  • Habitat for Humanity ReStore
  • Working gas equipment drained for fluids first

Recycling

Materials with meaningful recovery value route to specialized streams:

  • Metal roofing, gutters, brackets — Utica scrap metal yard
  • Steel sheds in particular — strong scrap value
  • Clean wood (untreated framing, OSB) — wood-waste recycling
  • Asphalt shingles — shingle recycling where available

Disposal

Material beyond reuse routes to the transfer station with full documentation available:

  • Pressure-treated lumber (chemicals exclude chipping)
  • Cracked plastic, vinyl siding, broken windows
  • Rotted or contaminated wood
  • Written disposal log on request for insurance or HOA

Four pathways into our crew's calendar.

Most shed jobs are residential homeowners getting rid of an aging or unwanted backyard shed. A meaningful share come from four other situations where the shed needs to go fast.

01 · Real estate

Flips and pre-listing prep

Sellers and listing agents often discover the rotted shed in the corner is killing the listing photos. We pull the structure before the photographer arrives. Same flat-rate pricing, scheduled around your listing timeline. Most pre-listing shed jobs turn in a single half-day.

02 · Property mgrs

Landlords and rental turnovers

A tenant-built shed left behind, a leaning structure flagged by the inspector, or a shed full of abandoned belongings — we coordinate with the property manager, arrive on a scheduled day, and have the structure and contents gone in under a day. Net-30 invoicing available.

03 · Estate & probate

Executors and listing agents

When a homeowner has passed and the home is being prepared for sale, backyard outbuildings usually need to go. We invoice the estate directly, provide written disposal documentation for the probate file, and bundle the shed with the main house cleanout at a reduced rate.

04 · Storm damage

Insurance claim documentation

A shed crushed by a fallen tree, blown over by winter wind, or caved in by snow load is usually an insurance claim. We provide written disposal documentation for the claim and have most storm-damaged sheds cleared within 48 hours of the call.

Read first, then email a photo. If the answer isn't here, ask Ryan or Drake directly at 315-509-3762.

How much does shed cleanout and removal cost in Utica, NY?

Shed cleanouts use the same volume-based flat-rate pricing as every UJR job. A 1/4 truckload is $325, 1/2 load $400, 3/4 load $475, and a full load is $600 — which our pricing page lists "a shed full of junk" as an example of. Large sheds or heavy demo run multiple loads, quoted on a photo. An $85/hour labor adder applies if the demo requires heavy disassembly.

Do you both empty the shed and tear it down?

Yes. We handle the full job in one engagement: empty the contents, sort what can be donated or recycled, then demo the structure with sawzalls and pry bars and haul every piece. You pay one flat-rate, you get one closeout. We can also do contents-only if you want to keep the structure.

Do I need to do anything before the crew arrives?

If the shed has electrical wired into it, please disconnect at the breaker before we arrive. We do not handle electrical work. Otherwise no prep is required — we bring our own tools, contractor bags, and trailer.

What about the concrete pad, paver base, or gravel foundation?

The foundation stays. Shed cleanout covers the structure (walls, roof, floor, door, windows) and any contents, but concrete pads, paver bases, and gravel pads are left intact. If you need the pad gone too, that is a separate concrete demolition quote.

Can you remove a metal or Tuff Shed?

Yes. Metal sheds, vinyl resin sheds, and Tuff Shed prefab structures all come apart cleanly with a sawzall and pry bars. Email a photo to info@junkremovaluticany.com for a firm quote.

How long does shed demo take?

A small empty shed takes 1 to 2 hours. A mid-size shed with normal contents takes 2 to 4 hours. A large or heavily-stocked shed runs 4 to 6 hours. All times include sorting, demo, sweep, and haul-away.

What gets donated, recycled, or hauled to disposal?

Working tools and yard equipment go to local donation or scrap value. Metal roofing, gutters, and frames route to the Utica scrap metal yard. Pressure-treated lumber goes to waste-wood routing or disposal. Asphalt shingles go to roofing recycling where available. Cracked plastic, rotted wood, and broken windows go to the transfer station.

Can you take a shed that has rotted into the ground or collapsed?

Yes. Collapsed, rotted, storm-damaged, and abandoned sheds are normal for us. Condition does not change the price tier, only the size. We bring extra blades and gloves and bag rotted material as we go.

Do you remove the contents of a shed without demolishing the structure?

Yes. Contents-only shed cleanouts use the volume-based pricing — typically a 1/4 to 1/2 load depending on what is in there. We empty everything, sweep the floor, and leave the structure standing for you to keep using.

Can you take down a shed full of yard waste, broken tools, and old paint cans?

Yes on the yard waste and broken tools. On paint cans: dried-out latex paint we can take. Liquid oil-based paint, solvents, and other household hazardous waste have to be disposed at the Oneida County HHW collection — we cannot legally haul liquid hazardous materials.
