Junk Removal South of Utica: Sauquoit, Chadwicks, Washington Mills
South of Utica the houses get older, the lots get bigger, and the stuff that needs to go stops fitting in a trash can. Sauquoit, Chadwicks, Washington Mills, Clayville, and Cassville are where we get called for sheds, barns, playsets, packed garages, and whole houses, usually in September and October when people want it gone before the snow. Here is how junk removal actually works up the Route 8 corridor, what it costs, when a dumpster is the better call, and one Sauquoit job from this month that shows how a quote comes together.
The short version
- Same flat rates as Utica: $200 for a single item, $300 for two, then $325, $400, $475, and $600 for a quarter, half, three-quarter, and full trailer. Sauquoit is about six miles out; there is no trip charge.
- The flat rate covers loading, hauling, and disposal. Light shed demo is priced inside the volume tiers. Heavy teardown, cutting, digging something out, and hazardous items are extra labor, quoted in writing before we start.
- No city bulk pickup out here. The one-item-a-week rule is a City of Utica program. In the towns of New Hartford and Paris, garbage is your own arrangement with a private hauler, and a couch or a fridge is usually extra or not taken at all.
- Dumpsters: no street permit to worry about, but a long or gravel driveway, a weight limit, and a week of carrying it yourself still apply. For a slow renovation, rent one. For a clear-out, we are faster and usually cheaper.
- Propane tanks, paint, and tires do not ride in a normal load. They go to the OHSWA EcoDrop on Leland Avenue in Utica.
- To get a number: call 315-509-3762 or email photos to info@junkremovaluticany.com. Most quotes come back the same day.
Why the valley is a different job than the city
Route 8 leaves New Hartford, drops through Washington Mills and Chadwicks, follows Sauquoit Creek into Sauquoit, and keeps climbing toward Clayville and Cassville. Along the way the housing changes. Utica proper is two-family houses on narrow lots with a curb out front. The valley is 1950s and 60s ranches on half an acre, farmhouses with a barn or two, and newer builds at the end of long driveways. Three things follow from that.
First, there is more of it. A city garage holds a car and a lawn mower. A valley property has a garage, a shed, sometimes a barn, and thirty years of things that were put out there because there was room. When a family finally decides to clear it, the volume is a full trailer more often than a single item.
Second, nobody is coming to get it for free. Inside the Utica city line, the city collects one bulk item per week per building, which we covered in our Utica bulk trash rules guide. That program stops at the city line. Out here your garbage is a private-hauler contract, and while some haulers will take a bulk item for a fee, most will not touch a mattress, a hot tub, a shed, or anything that came out of a renovation. Check with your hauler, but plan on the answer being no.
Third, the ground and the access matter. Sheds and playsets sit at the back of the lot, often at the tree line, often with a wet spot between them and the driveway. Whether the trailer can back up to the pile or whether everything comes out by hand across the lawn is the single biggest variable in what an outdoor job costs. It is the first thing we ask about.
What people in Sauquoit and Chadwicks actually call about
Over the past year the calls from the valley have sorted into a fairly short list. The table shows what each one usually turns out to be and where it lands on the pricing page. Every number is quoted before we lift anything, and you pay for the trailer space you use.
| The call | What it usually is | Where it lands |
|---|---|---|
| "The garage has not had a car in it since 2010." | Half to full trailer: lawn equipment, bikes, paint cans, a fridge that stopped working, lumber. | $400 to $600. See garage cleanout. |
| "There is a shed out back we want gone." | Empty it, take it down, haul the pieces and the contents. Quoted per shed. | $325 for a small shed's contents, $600 for a full shed with light demo and contents, $1,000 and up for large sheds or heavy demo, quoted on size, condition, and access. See shed cleanout. |
| "The kids are grown and the playset is rotting." | Pressure-treated wood, a slide, sometimes a cemented post. Comes apart with tools, then loads. | Usually a quarter to half trailer plus teardown labor. See residential demolition. |
| "My parents' house has to be emptied." | Whole-house cleanout, basement to attic, multiple loads over one or two days. | $1,500 to $2,000 or more, quoted on a walkthrough. See estate cleanout. |
| "We just need the couch and the old mattress gone." | Two items, carried out from wherever they are. | $300. See furniture removal. |
| "The contractor left a pile of drywall and lumber." | Renovation debris, loaded by the trailer. | Quoted by load from $200. See debris removal. |
| "How much to rent a dumpster in Sauquoit?" | Usually a garage or basement clear-out, not a renovation. See the next section. | Most of these end up as a $400 to $600 haul instead. See dumpster rental in Utica. |
The dumpster question, answered for a rural driveway
"Dumpster rental Sauquoit," "dumpster rental Chadwicks," and "dumpster rental Washington Mills" are searches people in the valley run every month, so let us answer it straight. We do not rent dumpsters. We show up with a trailer and a crew, load it ourselves, and it is gone the same afternoon. But there are cases where a rented container is the right tool, and we will tell you when you are in one.
The valley removes one of the usual dumpster headaches: there is no street permit, because the container goes on your own land. It adds two others. A roll-off truck needs firm ground and a straight run, and a long gravel driveway or a soft September lawn is where containers get refused or leave ruts you will be looking at until spring. And the weight limit still applies, which is the line item that surprises people when the invoice arrives after a load of wet lumber and old paving stones.
The real cost, though, is the same everywhere: the container sits for a week and you carry everything to it. If the project is a slow renovation where debris comes out a little at a time over three weeks, rent the dumpster. If the project is "everything in that garage goes," a haul is one afternoon and you do not lift anything. We laid out the full comparison, with prices, in dumpster rental vs. junk removal.
A Sauquoit job from this month, and how the quote came together
Early in September a Sauquoit homeowner sent us a contact form for a shed, then followed up with photos and one more item. The shed was a small gambrel-roof wooden building, maybe ten by twelve, with poison ivy grown across the door side. Inside were a lawn mower, some odds and ends, and a number of older propane tanks. The added item was a wooden playset at the tree line that had been left long enough for live trees to grow up through the frame, with a galvanized pole in the footprint that looked cemented.
That job is a good example of the difference between a flat-rate haul and quoted labor. Loading and hauling the contents of the shed is ordinary work at ordinary rates. Everything else on the list changes the number:
- Poison ivy in September means long sleeves, gloves, washing every tool afterward, and never burning the debris. It adds time and it adds care.
- Propane tanks cannot ride in a normal construction and demolition load. They go to EcoDrop separately, and the count and size matter to the price, so we asked before we gave a final number.
- Trees through the playset frame and a cemented post turn "take apart and load" into cutting and, at the pole, a decision about whether to cut at grade or dig. We quoted cutting at grade and said so in writing.
- No trailer access to the playset. Everything came out by hand through brush, which is labor, and labor is what the price is made of.
The homeowner got a written quote with two questions to confirm before the crew arrived: could the trailer reach the shed, and how many tanks were there. The shed came in at $1,300, the playset at $500, both with the concrete pad excluded and the footings cut at grade, all of it done in one visit. That is the shape of most outdoor jobs in the valley: a clear flat rate for the hauling, a clear separate number for the labor, and nothing added at the end.
Town by town
Washington Mills and Chadwicks
The top of the corridor, still inside the Town of New Hartford, and the most suburban stretch: ranches and split-levels off Oneida Street with attached garages that fill up fast. Most calls here are garage cleanouts, appliance swaps, and furniture before a move. Details on the Washington Mills and Chadwicks pages, and the New Hartford page covers the village and Commercial Drive side.
Sauquoit
About six miles south of Utica on Route 8, straddling Sauquoit Creek. This is where the lots open up and the sheds, barns, and playsets start. Sauquoit is also the address we see most often for whole-property cleanouts, where a garage, a shed, and a basement all go in one booking. See the Sauquoit page.
Clayville and Cassville
Further up the valley in the Town of Paris. Older housing, longer driveways, more outbuildings, and the farthest point in the valley we treat as a standard run with no trip charge. The Clayville and Cassville pages have the specifics.
What does not go in the trailer
The list is short, but the valley hits it more than the city does because of what accumulates in outbuildings. Propane tanks, oil tanks, and 55-gallon drums go to the OHSWA EcoDrop at 80 Leland Avenue in Utica, open weekdays 8 to 4 and Saturdays 7 to 2. Liquid paint and pesticides go to the Authority's household hazardous waste facility, which runs April through September, so late September is your window. Tires are limited. We take pianos, safes, hot tubs, and most appliances, and we will tell you on the phone if something on your list is a problem. The full list is in what junk removal will not take.
The fall calendar, and why September is the month
Two dates drive most of the valley's fall calls. The first is the furnace or boiler tune-up, usually booked for September or October, when the technician has to reach the unit and the basement path is blocked. The second is the first plowable snow, after which a shed at the back of the lot and a pile beside the garage are both staying put until April. Working backward from those, the window to clear outdoor things is now. Our fall cleanout checklist walks through the order to do it in.
"I used Utica Junk Removal to clear out all the construction debris from my father's house in New Hartford, NY. They showed up on time, worked hard, and got rid of a big mess of wood, drywall, and other junk that was left over from renovations. The crew was friendly, fast, and left the place looking clean when they were done."
Corey Peters, Google reviewFrequently asked questions
Do you charge extra to come to Sauquoit, Clayville, or Cassville?
No. Sauquoit is about six miles from Utica, and the whole Route 8 corridor through Clayville and Cassville is a standard run for us. The flat rates on our pricing page are the same in the valley as they are in the city, with no trip fee.
How much does it cost to have a shed removed in Sauquoit?
A small shed's contents start at $325, a full shed cleanout with light demo and contents is $600, and large sheds or heavy demo run $1,000 and up, quoted on size, condition, and access. A recent Sauquoit job with a small wooden shed, poison ivy, and propane tanks inside came to $1,300 for the shed including teardown, contents, hauling, and disposal. Send photos and we will quote yours the same day.
Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster in Chadwicks or Washington Mills than to hire junk removal?
For a garage or basement clear-out, usually not, once you add the delivery fee, the weight limit, and the week of carrying it yourself. A half to full trailer haul runs $400 to $600 and is done in an afternoon. A dumpster wins for a slow renovation where debris comes out over several weeks.
Will my regular garbage hauler take a couch or a refrigerator?
Outside the City of Utica there is no municipal bulk pickup, and most private haulers in the towns of New Hartford and Paris either charge extra for a bulk item or do not take furniture and appliances at all. Ask your hauler, but a single-item pickup from us is $200, carried out from wherever it sits.
Can you take the propane tanks that are in my shed?
Pressurized tanks cannot ride in a normal load. They go to the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority EcoDrop at 80 Leland Avenue in Utica. Tell us how many there are and what size when you ask for a quote, and we will tell you exactly how to handle them.
Do I need to be home for a cleanout in the valley?
No. Many of our valley jobs are for family members who live elsewhere or for property owners managing from a distance. We can work from a lockbox or a key handoff, send photos before and after, and take payment by card.
How fast can you get to Sauquoit or Clayville?
Same-day or next-day for most single-item and partial-load jobs. Whole-house cleanouts and shed teardowns are scheduled after a quote, usually within the week during the fall season.
