What Junk Removal Won’t Take in Utica, NY
Junk removal in Utica takes almost everything in a normal home, garage, basement, or estate — furniture, appliances, mattresses, tires, scrap, electronics, and years of clutter. The short list of things we can't haul is set by law and safety: household hazardous waste (paint, chemicals, automotive fluids), propane tanks, asbestos, biohazard waste, and a few specialty appliances. Below is exactly what's off-limits and where each item actually needs to go in Oneida County.
The short version
- We can't take: paint & chemicals, propane/pressurized tanks, asbestos, biohazard waste, ammo/explosives, and appliances with leaking refrigerant or mercury.
- We absolutely can take: tires, electronics & TVs, scrap, yard equipment, furniture, mattresses, and standard appliances — including fridges and freezers handled correctly.
- Most restricted items go to the Oneida County hazardous waste facility (run by OHSWA).
- Not sure about one item? Call 315-509-3762 — we'll tell you straight and point you to the right place if it's not us.
First, what we do take
Most "can you take this?" worries are unfounded. A full house cleanout, a packed basement, or a garage stacked to the ceiling is exactly what we do. That includes a lot of items people assume are banned:
- Tires, scrap metal, and yard equipment — common garage holdouts, all fine.
- Electronics, computers, and old TVs — we route these to certified e-waste recycling, not the landfill.
- Appliances — refrigerators, washers, dryers, and stoves, with refrigerant handled correctly.
- Mattresses and box springs — recycled where possible.
- Furniture, clutter, paper, dry trash, broken anything — the ordinary contents of a home.
If it isn't on the restricted list below, assume we take it. When in doubt, send a photo to info@junkremovaluticany.com and we'll confirm before we come out.
What junk removal can't take — and where it goes instead
These items are restricted for legal or safety reasons. No reputable hauler in Utica will put them on a truck, and you shouldn't put them in your curbside trash either. Here's the correct route for each.
| Item | Why we can't haul it | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Paint, stains, solvents | Household hazardous waste | Oneida County HHW facility (OHSWA) |
| Pool & lawn chemicals, pesticides | Household hazardous waste | Oneida County HHW facility (OHSWA) |
| Automotive fluids, gasoline, antifreeze | Household hazardous waste | Oneida County HHW facility (OHSWA) |
| Batteries (car, lithium, rechargeable) | Fire/chemical hazard | OHSWA or retail drop-off |
| Propane tanks & pressurized cylinders | Explosion risk when compacted | Propane exchange or OHSWA |
| Asbestos-containing materials | Requires licensed abatement | Certified asbestos abatement company |
| Biohazard (human/animal waste, needles, active mold) | Requires licensed remediation | Certified remediation company first |
| Ammunition & explosives | Illegal to transport as waste | Local police department |
| Appliances w/ leaking refrigerant or mercury | Regulated refrigerant/mercury | Specialty hauler (call us, we'll refer) |
How to dispose of the tricky ones in Oneida County
Paint and household chemicals
Liquid paint, stains, solvents, pesticides, and pool chemicals are household hazardous waste (HHW) and belong at the Oneida County hazardous waste facility operated by the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (OHSWA). One exception: latex (water-based) paint that has been left open to fully dry and harden — with the lid off — can usually go in regular trash. Oil-based paint never can. OHSWA updates its accepted-items list and drop-off hours seasonally, so check ohswa.org or call them before you load the car.
Propane tanks
A standard grill-size propane tank can't be thrown away or hauled because a compactor can rupture it. The easiest route is a propane exchange at a hardware store or gas station — swap the old tank when you buy a new one. Larger or unusual cylinders go to the county HHW facility. We'll clear the rest of the shed or garage in the same trip.
Refrigerators, freezers, and AC units
We do take these — the refrigerant is handled correctly as part of the job. The only ones we can't are units with visibly leaking refrigerant, vintage units with mercury components, and full-size commercial walk-in freezers. If you've got one of those, call us and we'll point you to a licensed specialty hauler.
Old TVs and electronics
New York bans e-waste from landfills, which is exactly why we route electronics to certified e-waste recyclers. Tube TVs, flat screens, computers, monitors, and printers all come with us on a normal load — no special trip to a drop-off needed on your end.
Tires
Tires are fine for us to take, even though most transfer stations charge a per-tire fee and many haulers refuse them. If you're only getting rid of a couple and want to do it yourself, many tire shops accept old tires for a small fee when you buy replacements.
What happens to everything we do haul
We don't just run everything to the dump. Furniture in good condition and usable household goods route to Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and local thrift partners. Electronics go to certified e-waste recycling, scrap metal gets recycled, and household hazardous materials are directed to the county facility. Only what truly can't be donated or recycled — usually 30 to 50 percent of a load — goes to the transfer station. It's better for the area, and it's the right way to do the job.
Frequently asked "will you take it?" questions
What will junk removal not take?
Household hazardous waste (paint, solvents, chemicals, automotive fluids, batteries), propane and pressurized tanks, asbestos, biohazard waste, ammunition and explosives, and appliances with leaking refrigerant or mercury. Almost everything else in a normal household is fair game.
How do I dispose of paint and chemicals in Oneida County?
Take them to the Oneida County hazardous waste facility run by OHSWA — not the regular trash and not our truck. Fully dried, hardened latex paint with the lid off can usually go in normal trash. Confirm current hours and accepted items at ohswa.org.
Do you take tires, electronics, or TVs?
Yes to all three. Tires, scrap, yard equipment, and electronics — including old TVs — are part of a normal load, with electronics routed to certified e-waste recycling.
Can you take a refrigerator or freezer?
Yes, with refrigerant handled correctly. The exceptions are units with visibly leaking refrigerant, mercury-containing units, and commercial walk-in freezers — call us and we'll refer you to a specialty hauler.
How do I get rid of a propane tank?
Use a propane exchange at a hardware store or gas station, or bring it to the county hazardous waste facility. They can't go in the trash or our truck because of the explosion risk.
Do you handle biohazard, mold, or asbestos?
No — those need a licensed remediation company first. Once the space is professionally cleared, we'll haul the ordinary debris and can recommend a remediation company if you need one.
Not sure if we take it? Just ask.
Tell us what you've got — over the phone or by photo — and we'll give you a straight answer and a free flat-rate quote, same-day pickup when the schedule allows.
